Mazda 3 Generations
Mazda 3 2016 (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), 4 generation
The fourth-generation Mazda 3 was launched for the 2019 model year, adhering to a simplified interpretation of the Kodo design language characterized by minimal adornment and the removal of creases and character lines along the bodysides. The only engine offered is a 186-horsepower four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, or, on the premium trim level hatchback, a six-speed manual. All-wheel drive is offered for the first time on the 3 during this generation.
Mazda 3 2009 (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), 3 generation
The third-generation Mazda 3 returned to form with clean, “Kodo” design elements and superb interiors rendered with its highest-quality materials yet. A proper stand-up color infotainment screen with a disc-style controller dominated the dashboard. Power came from either a 155-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 184-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and both of which benefited from weight-saving, fuel-efficient SkyActiv technology. Manual and automatic transmissions continued to be offered, both of which had six speeds.
Mazda 3 2004 (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), 2 generation
The second-generation Mazda 3 wore overwrought, cartoonish styling and was less universally praised than its predecessor upon its debut for 2010. It was the first Mazda 3 to offer a navigation system—a small screen in the center of the dashboard inconveniently located up near the windshield. It was powered by 140 and 160-hp four-cylinder engines initially. For 2012, Mazda’s hyper-efficient SkyActiv-G engine was offered, yielding excellent fuel efficiency. The second-generation Mazda 3 hatchback was the only 3 variant offered in sport-tuned Mazdaspeed form.
Mazda 3 1999 (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003), 1 generation
The Mazda 3 hatchback was introduced for the 2003 model year along with a sedan. It was intended to be a stylish and sporty alternative to the sedan at a time when hatchbacks were not considered sleek nor sporty. With predatory front end styling, clean lines, and clear-lens taillamps, it looked the part. It was heavy on the hard plastic, and rather loud inside. But its excellent dynamics set the 3 at the top of the compact car class.
