A six-speed manual transmission was standard on the base model (until it was dropped altogether in 2018) while a six-speed automatic transmission was standard on all others. Numerous product enhancements arrive during this life cycle taking the 6 upscale, the most notable being fancier new trim levels and a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that was introduced for the 2018 model year.

The first Mazda 6 sedan arrived for the 2003 model year, replacing the 626 sedan and introducing a new design language that other Mazda models soon followed.
