This biggest visual change to the 5 Series is likely the difference between the fourth and fifth generations. The interior was also completely redesigned, and although it looked more modern, it took away some of the driver focus that made the vehicle popular in the first place. The 5 Series was more about comfort than ever, and the newly introduced Active Front Steering diluted driving feel. Adaptive headlights and the iDrive rotary infotainment controller debuted during this generation, as well, and the early user experience was a major negative.
