Volkswagen Golf Generations

Volkswagen Golf 2015 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), 7 generation

The seventh-generation Golf moved to Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix architecture. It dropped in weight but grew in size. The base engine was a 1.8-liter with 170 horsepower and an available 2.5-liter. For the 2018 model year the GTI got a facelift and its full lineup was equipped with the 2.0-liter engine that received a power boost to 228 horsepower. The fourth iteration of the Golf R was equipped with the same 2.0-liter turbo engine as the Audi S3, which delivered 300 horsepower.

Volkswagen Golf 2010 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014), 6 generation

The Golf nameplate returned for its sixth generation. It featured a prominent character lines on the side that ran from the headlights to the taillights. The base 2.5-liter engine was re-tuned to make 170 horsepower. The GTI was mostly unchanged but for the power boost on its 2.0-liter engine that now delivered 270 horsepower. The Golf R debuted for the 2012 model year as a four-wheel-drive version of the GTI with the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine as Audi’s TTS. It was paired to a six-speed manual and delivered 256 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque.

Volkswagen Golf 2006 (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), 5 generation

Volkswagen brought back the Rabbit nameplate when it debuted the fifth-generation Golf. It’s base engine was a 2.5-liter with 150 horsepower. The GTI had a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection engine with 200 horsepower. The R32 surfaced again for the 2008 model year and was equipped with a 250-horsepower version of the GTI’s turbocharged engine.

Volkswagen Golf 2000 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005), 4 generation

The fourth-generation Golf featured an all-new design that featured a flatter windshield and a roofline that carried further back to a steeper rear window. Volkswagen gave it its 4Motion all-wheel drivetrain as well as electronic stability control and a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Golf R32 also debuted for the 2004 model year—it was a more powerful edition of the GTI with a 3.2-liter V6 that delivered 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque.
