Honda Element Generations
Honda Element 2011 (2011), 9rd generation
Honda has dropped the SC trim, which had a carpeted cargo area as opposed to the plastic used in other trims.
Honda Element 2010 (2010), 8rd generation
The Element is a bit of an outdated design, and this is evident in its somewhat cheap interior, which falls short of the more modern Honda. The square shape, on the other hand, is a utilitarian’s dream. The side-folding rear seats provide a really flat floor that’s great for weekend athletes’ bikes or other equipment, as is the plastic floor itself. If you’re going camping, the front and rear seats fold down to form a makeshift bed.
Honda Element 2009 (2009), 7rd generation
At first glance, the 2009 Honda Element seems like the perfect kid’s mobile car. Virtually every surface of the Element is waterproof and wipeable. The floor is rubberized and there are no cracks or crevices to collect dirt. There are tons of storage drawers, and there’s almost nothing in the car that kids can destroy. Even the doors work like prison gates to lock up the little monsters, and I mean the angels inside. It sounds perfect, but it’s not. The doors are a huge disappointment because almost everything else in the Element is great. It’s a fun and practical car, as long as no one gets in or out of the back seat very often. It’s a four-seater that converts to a cargo vehicle in minutes, which is great if your cargo isn’t a baby.
Honda Element 2008 (2008), 6rd generation
All Honda elements are powered by Honda’s familiar 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 166 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque .
Honda Element 2007 (2007), 5rd generation
For 2007, the four-seat Element got a slightly updated styling and a more powerful drivetrain. More importantly, it received new safety features such as side-curtain airbags and electronic stability systems, both of which are much-needed. New to the Element lineup is the sport-tuned version of the SC (“Street Custom,” Honda says) that I tested. It comes with front-wheel drive only; all-wheel drive is optional on the LX and EX trims. Last year’s EX-P trim is gone.
Honda Element 2006 (2006), 4rd generation
Honda considers it vital to bring youth into its family, so for 2006 it added the Element EX-P, which gives these metal panels a body-color paint coat. However, the front and rear bumpers are now black, along with rocker panels and wide trim on either side of the roof.
Honda Element 2005 (2005), 3rd generation
For 2005, side-impact airbags are standard on EX models, which also gain standard XM Satellite Radio as well as MP3 and Windows Media Audio playback capability. Power mirrors and cruise control have been added to LX models. Built in Ohio, the Element comes with front- or all-wheel drive.
Honda Element 2004 (2004), 2rd generation
According to Honda, the Element combines the best features of a pickup truck and SUV, while retaining the Model X concept’s most striking feature: a side-door configuration without supports, which provides flexibility when loading cargo. Although it was directly aimed at active young buyers, the Element has appealed to quite a few older people who appreciate its practical merits. The wide, center-opening swinging doors with no middle pillar between them are the most prominent stylistic feature of the Element’s simple exterior design. To create a wide entry space, the rear doors hinge at the rear and the front doors hinge at the front. The Element is smaller than the Japanese automaker’s Pilot SUV, but its style is decidedly more adventurous.
Honda Element 2003 (2003), 1rd generation
The youth-oriented Element was launched as a 2003 model. The 2.4-liter twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine used in the base Honda Accord and Honda CRV is a model of power and efficiency. There is 160 horsepower, which is enough to move this car around. But, loaded with life’s gear, it can end up running slow. Although only one engine is offered, there is a choice of transmissions. A five-speed manual transmission is available on all-wheel drive models. A four-speed automatic transmission is available with both front- and all-wheel drive. The comfortable front seat is good, but the seat is similar to that in the Winnebago-the driver sits far away from the upright windshield. The front seats are firm, but still provide adequate comfort. The rear seats are set too low to provide any comfort. But since they will fold down most of the time, it may not matter. There are plenty of hooks, storage drawers, and other handy features that will make the Element a comfortable place to spend time.
