Jeep Liberty Generations

Jeep Liberty 2012 (2012), 11 generation

Jeep is pretty easy to pick out of a crowd of cars, and the Liberty is no exception. Jeep adopted a more square design, which has been retained until the 2012 version. The flat grille with seven slots is a Jeep trademark that is present on all current Jeep models. The flared fenders give the Liberty some expression, but the square look is typical of SUVs. The standard cloth front bucket seats have long cushions that provide good thigh support, but the backrest cushioning is a bit uneven and doesn’t fit your back.

Jeep Liberty 2011 (2011), 10 generation

For 2011, besides the new Renegade trim level, there are no significant changes for 2011.

Jeep Liberty 2010 (2010), 9 generation

For 2010, the Liberty gets a system that shuts off the engine when decelerating to improve its gas mileage, as well as an indicator on the dash to show when the Liberty is being driven efficiently.

Jeep Liberty 2009 (2009), 8 generation

The Liberty comes with four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock brakes, stability control and traction control. This car also comes equipped with front impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both rows, but no front passenger airbags. An optional parking assist system is included, which includes a sonar-based warning system with audio and visual warnings.

Jeep Liberty 2008 (2008), 7 generation

The 2008 version is fully boxed to help achieve the aura of the Cherokee. However, the steep angles are reminiscent not so much of a classic Cherokee as of a World War II Jeep. It’s a masculine look that may put off the avid female buyers that made the original Liberty such a strong seller. The Liberty may have had brand new sheetmetal and a different interior, but its engine is exactly the same. The 210-horsepower V-6 is quite adequate, especially at cruising highway speeds.

Jeep Liberty 2007 (2007), 6 generation

The Liberty diesel engine and Renegade trim were removed in 2007, and a new Jeep Green Metallic paint scheme was added.

Jeep Liberty 2006 (2006), 5 generation

There are no significant changes in this model year.

Jeep Liberty 2005 (2005), 4 generation

For 2005, Liberty models get a freshened exterior, including a new fascia, grille, fog lamps, fender flares and bodyside moldings. Interior modifications include relocated power-window switches and new instrument-cluster graphics and trim bezels.

Jeep Liberty 2004 (2004), 3 generation

Safety features are the big news for 2004, as the Liberty gains a tire-pressure monitor and a BeltAlert reminder. A new Enhanced Accident Response System automatically unlocks the doors and then illuminates the courtesy lights 5 seconds after the deployment of an airbag, and the fuel pump shuts off immediately. All models add a passenger-side dashboard-mounted grab handle. The Renegade gains Rock Rail Protection and black bodyside moldings.

Jeep Liberty 2003 (2003), 2 generation

Two engines are available for the Liberty: a six-cylinder engine and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which may be enough for the four-wheel drive version. It develops 150 hp at 5,200 rpm and 165 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. For more serious work, however, a six is a must. It develops 210 hp at 5200 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The manual transmission shifts fairly well, with an easily adjustable clutch. Jeep’s Command-Trac all-wheel-drive mechanism could only be activated on slippery roads or trails. With no inter-axle differential, it may be better for serious off-road riding than the more versatile Selec-Trac, which can be used as 2WD, AWD or 4WD, depending on conditions. Both shift gears are low range and have an overall torque increase ratio of 2.72: 1. This is useful for very slow crawling over logs and rocks or for going down a steep slope without using the brakes.

Jeep Liberty 2002 (2002), 1 generation

Liberty looks like a 21st century SUV – smooth, beautifully rounded lines and a stylish grille, still able to pay homage to the hard-working Jeep products of yesteryear. Four doors open to a cabin that is small but quite comfortable for five. With 210 horses, the Liberty handles all road situations with relative ease. Off-roading, which would challenge many small SUVs, was not a problem for the Liberty. Performance on the streets and highways was consistent. The Liberty held steep corners superbly at high speeds-especially for a relatively inexpensive sport model.
