As is the norm with modern Land Rovers, the Range Rover Sport blends luxury, technology and off-road capability. It uses a lightweight aluminum structure, has standard full-time four-wheel drive and offers a range of drivetrains, including a plug-in hybrid setup.

The HSE Silver Edition and SVR Carbon Edition have been added to the Range Rover Sport lineup. The Silver Edition features 21-inch gloss-black alloy wheels and exterior trim with a Shadow Atlas finish. The Carbon Edition features 22-inch gloss-black wheels and exterior and interior carbon-fiber accents.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is now standard. Gloss-black 22-inch wheels are available.

A new plug-in hybrid, the Range Rover Sport P400e, features an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and a gas four-cylinder engine. Total system output is 398 horsepower. A new wade sensing system gives real-time depth readings, while a new Driver Assist Package adds adaptive cruise control with steering assist, among other features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity are a no-cost option.

The Range Rover Sport has standard seating for five, but an available third row increases seating capacity to seven; keep in mind it’s small and best used by kids. Range Rover Sport competitors include the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Porsche Cayenne.

New features include Blind Spot Assist, an Intelligent Speed Limiter that uses road signs to set the SUV’s speed, and Advanced Tow Assist. Advanced Tow Assist lets the driver use the Terrain Response 2 rotary controller to guide an attached trailer when reversing. In addition, the InControl Touch Pro multimedia system with a 10.2-inch touch-screen is now standard.

For this model year, a turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6 engine is a new option. InControl Remote & Protect is now standard. New available features include a washer for the backup camera as well as a hands-free power liftgate and All-Terrain Progress Control.

The SVR trim level is new for 2015 in the Range Rover Sport, and it includes unique design elements, a sport-tuned chassis and a supercharged V-8 engine. In addition, an available Driver Assistance Package with lane departure warning, surround parking sensors and a self-parking system is new. Satellite and HD radio are now standard.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport is loaded with all sorts of exciting technology, luxurious touches and even some family-friendly features, but it glaringly falls short in cornering.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport’s on-road ride is entirely pleasant, with a newly engineered air suspension system that automatically adjusts between two ride heights and feels noticeably smooth and soft, managing to equalize small bumps and irregularities in the road.

The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport may lose some shoppers to its cheaper, equally sporty sibling, the Evoque, but it still combines traditional SUV qualities with uncharacteristic driving fun.

Aside from changes to option package content and new exterior colors, there are no significant changes for 2011.

With its smaller size and on-road focus, the Range Rover Sport is the sportiest of Land Rover’s SUVs. Thanks to some improvements for 2010, it’s now quicker and sportier than ever, as well as classier inside.

Like most of the Land Rover family, the Range Rover Sport has vents on its front fenders. The grille has the same pattern as a Range Rover, and it has a nearly vertical windshield with big side windows. Seen from any angle, the Range Rover Sport has what auto critics call a big “greenhouse”, though it’s still smaller than a Range Rover’s. It looks comparatively chopped, and sleeker.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport was the HSE version, it had fewer standard features than the supercharged version. Heated rear seats, cornering lights and adaptive bi-xenon headlights that swivel as you turn are things that are optional on the HSE, but are standard on the Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged model. There are some Rover features that are common to both, and worth keeping in mind: first, the rear hatch is split, so you can lift just the glass or the whole hatch, but you should know that when you lift the whole hatch, it’s pretty heavy — or at least heavier than you’d expect from a fancy luxury SUV. There’s also a power latch that closes the hatch tightly when you close it.

While many of today’s all-wheel SUVs have abandoned the boxy styling that typified the segment’s heyday in the ’90s, Rover has remained true to its roots with its current lineup. Like the flagship Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport features an upright mesh grille that’s flanked by standard high-intensity-discharge bi-xenon headlights. It’s a stylish look, especially when compared to the rear, which comes across as cluttered and unnecessarily busy with its full-width Range Rover name at the bottom of the liftgate. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is distinguished by aggressively raked D-pillars, but this type of design tends to diminish interior cargo room. Other design features include a downward-sloping roofline, side vents in the front fenders, rocker panel moldings and standard 19-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tires (20-inch wheels are optional on the base HSE trim and standard on Supercharged models).

Land Rover has long been known for its luxurious and well-appointed interiors. From the inside, the Range Rover Sport offers a cabin design that’s arguably a cut above the BMW. The X5 has more nimble handling on pavement, though the Range Rover Sport is more capable off-road. Neither is cheap, but the Range Rover Sport gets especially pricey with options.
