Volkswagen Passat Generations
Volkswagen Passat US 2019 (2019, 2020, 2021), 12 generation
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat comes with a 2.0-liter engine with 174 hp and 207 Nm of torque and a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Power is transferred to the front wheels through a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The Passat’s exterior retains the basic characteristics of its predecessor model, but has completely changed its style, with a dynamic coupe-style roof line, a gripping “tornado” line and an aggressive grille, giving the latest Volkswagen Passat a daring look.
Volkswagen Passat 2019 (2019, 2020, 2021), 11 generation
There have been no fewer than 30 million Passat models produced in Wolfsburg in 2019, and more than seven generations of nameplates creating its own Legen, the eighth version of the model in a mid-cycle facelift look. Most of the upgrades are inside, where, thanks to new hardware and software, the new Digital Cockpit has been greatly improved over the previous active information display. With significantly improved graphics and enhanced features, the system now offers three different display configurations, which can be customized with the upgraded multifunction steering wheel. The appearance is almost identical to its predecessor, although the new shape of the headlights and redesigned front and rear bumpers give it a slightly more dynamic look.
Volkswagen Passat 2014 (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), 10 generation
The 2015 Volkswagen Passat debuted a new design that combines stylish clarity and impressive power in both the exterior and interior. The exclusive look of the new Passat was achieved in part through a wide range of extremely precisely drawn edges and creases that form individual reflective surfaces. The grille is considerably larger than the headlights. In all three equipment variants (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline), it is complemented by four chrome slats. On the sides, these slats curve inward to the trapezoidal headlights. The lowest chrome grille strip continues into the headlights. Above the grille and headlights, there is another chrome accent that extends across the width of the front end and continues laterally into the character line (from “Highline”). Volkswagen has developed a completely new lighting design for the eighth-generation Passat. The car is available with halogen and LED headlights. In particular, the LED headlights offered in two variants create a unique look. In the interior, the designers paid special attention to the driver-oriented design and the very spacious front cabin space. Therefore, starting from the driver’s seat, the instrument panel rises upwards in the space on either side of the instruments, sloping slightly toward the windshield.
Volkswagen Passat US 2012 (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), 9 generation
Volkswagen did a great job when it decided to build a special for America Passat for the 2012 model, resulting in a lower price than its predecessor. The three-blade grille with chrome inlays and the wide lower air intake surrounded by angularly shaped fog lamps confirmed its affiliation with the Volkswagen stable. Angular shaped taillights crossed the rear fenders on the rear trunk lid, creating a stylish look. With a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the American Passat provided a more expansive interior for rear passengers. At the front, bucket seats provided good lateral support for both passengers. The automaker installed a touch-screen infotainment system on the slanted center console. The instrument cluster was typical Volkswagen, with two large dials for the speedometer and tachometer, plus a TFT display in between. Under the skin, the Passat got a revised suspension with a McPherson type up front and a four-lever independent rear axle. Oddly enough, the automaker didn’t make the Passat with an all-wheel-drive system, though it could have. Under the hood, Volkswagen offered a choice of three engines: a 2.5-liter base model with an inline five-cylinder engine, a 3.6-liter V-6, and a 2.0-liter TDI unit. Later, the automaker added a 1.8-liter turbocharged version.
Volkswagen Passat 2010 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014), 8 generation
Although it features the B7 designation, the new Passat is actually a facelift of the B6 Passat. Heavily modified in September 2010, the car features a totally reworked exterior, with the Scirocco-like grille and headlights being some of the elements that strike the most. The North American version of the facelifted Passat, known as the New Mid Sedan (NMS) until the 2011 NAIAS, will be marketed as a new generation model (MY2012). The two cars feature different specifications however, despite sharing the same platform.
Volkswagen Passat CC 2009 (2009, 2010, 2011), 7 generation
Based on the well-known Volkswagen Passat, the CC version was a 4-door coupe version for the German automaker. It was launched in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show. The initials CC stand for Comfort Coupe, and it was Volkswagen’s answer to a market that demanded more sporty sedans, and for customers who didn’t like the coupe versions. Not to mention, there were no mid-size coupes in Volkswagen’s lineup. The design was a bold move by the traditional Volkswagen brand. The low-profile roof with very sloping uprights and narrow front end resembled a sports car. Frameless windows were also a novelty for the Volkswagen 4-door. The upgraded front and rear headlights clearly stated the distance from the regular Passat. The interior was designed for four adults, with a sportier front seat design and a profiled rear bench for two passengers. The low roof design limited headroom for the rear passengers. The instrument panel was straight, with horizontal lines to increase width. The instrument panel had analog dials carried over from the regular Passat.
Volkswagen Passat 2005 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010), 6 generation
In 2005, the Passat was already presented in its sixth generation at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Although the large sedan was definitely not in the high-end class, it would set it apart from the ordinary in many ways. The Passat was comfortable and convenient on long trips with excellent suspension. In the sportier models, comfort was replaced by better handling and they were equipped with lowered suspension and larger wheels. The Passat’s most popular engines were the 1.9-liter with 138 hp and the 2.0-liter with 168 hp. Inside the cabin, users had a sense of spaciousness thanks to the great finish. The front end was spacious, with a comfortable driving position and the ability to adjust the steering for each driver. The pantry inside the cab was excellent, with deep pockets in the door panels. The lack of a traditional handbrake contributed to the feeling of lightness, VW replaced it with an electric version. The Passat was available in four trims: Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline and Highline. The Passat received five stars in Euro-NCAP crash tests, with six airbags and ESP.
Volkswagen Passat 2000 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005), 5 generation
The 2000 Passat, also known as the B5.5, received several updates. Although it was an ordinary family car, it could serve as a mid-size company car with the right configuration. Moreover, the base versions were some of the best midsize rental sedans available on the market. At the front, the small rectangular headlights disappeared, and Volkswagen installed redesigned headlights and turn signals. The automaker decorated the horizontal grille slats with chrome lines to make the car look more prestigious. Following the same idea of a higher-quality product, it replaced the black rubber stripes with colored ones. A new set of taillights with butterfly-shaped taillight lenses noticeably changed the rear end. Volkswagen improved the interior of the 2000 Passat by adding new climate control buttons on the center console. Depending on the interior trim level and options, the automaker included better infotainment systems with satellite navigation. For the dashboard, the German automaker added shiny silver rings around the dials and gauges. With a 2.7-meter (106.4-inch) wheelbase, it offered decent space for rear passengers, although the transmission tunnel affected the middle passenger’s leg room on the bench. Volkswagen’s engine choices played a significant role in Passat sales. The automaker offered it with a wide power range from the fuel-efficient 1.9-liter TDI unit with 100 hp to the 4.0-liter W-8 gasoline engine with 275 hp. It was available with front- or all-wheel drive, with a manual or automatic (Tiptronic) transmission.
