A new standard based on the requirements of API CJ-4. The VDS-4 standard, compared to API CJ-4, has stricter requirements in the Mack T-12, Cummins ISM, and Cummins ISB tests plus the Volvo D12D test. Oils are available in two viscosity ranges SAE 5W-30 and SAE 15W-40. The VDS-4 standard is designed for all engines manufactured after 2007. VDS-4 motor oils provide better wear protection, thermal stability, and oxidation stability compared to VDS-3 oils. The standard is primarily designed for Volvo vehicles with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters), and/or SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems. Reaching its second generation in 2007, the S40 was an entry-level luxury sedan capable of offering refinement and style. Available in two trims, the S40 came with two engines: a 2.4-liter engine with 168 hp and a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine with 218 hp. While the 2.4-liter powertrain offered decent power, it was unimpressive and unattractive compared to the more powerful 2.5-liter unit. The base package came with 16-inch alloy wheels, manual climate control, power and heated mirrors, and was only available with front-wheel drive. Moving on to the T5 interior trim level, the S40 had the more powerful engine already mentioned, and in addition it could be equipped with an all-wheel drive system. Other standard equipment included fog lights, aluminum inlays in the cabin, automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and an on-board computer. These features can be added to the base interior trim level for an additional fee.
Volvo S40 2004 (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), 3 generation
The S40 was one of those cars that constantly improved over time, enhancing its appeal. Excellent handling and good traction were not the only aspects worth mentioning, as the S40 was also pocket-friendly and environmentally friendly. Offered with a variety of engines, the S40 was also chosen as Green Car of the Year thanks to its 1.6 diesel engine, which was equipped with a start-stop system — emissions were minimal.
